How to do a devotional
We should read the bible with purpose. The purpose should be to read and understand so we know how to respond to the word of God.
Before starting your devotional bible reading, begin with a simple sincere prayer asking God to speak to you through His word. An example could be Davids prayer:
“Open my eyes to see the wonderful truths in your instructions.” Psalm 119:18 NLT
Suggestion for your daily devo: For personal application use the H.E.A.R method:
HIGHLIGHT. Highlight the portion of scripture that God uses to speak to you. “What did God say to you while reading the scriptures?”
EXPLAIN. “What does the text mean?” You can better understand the text asking the following questions:
- Why was it written?
- Who was it written to originally?
- How does it fit with the verses before and after it?
- What is the Holy Spirit intending to communicate through this portion of scripture?
APPLY. How does this portion of scripture apply to my life? The bible says: “But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.” James 1:22 NLT. The following questions will help you discover how the scripture applies to your life:
- How can this help me?
- How would the application of this verse look like in my daily life?
- What is God saying to me?
RESPOND. What will you do with what you have learned?
